Solution set.

Due date: Mar 5

Files to be submitted:
  Hw1.pdf

Purpose: To do an initial pass at OSI and TCP/IP layers which will serve as a reference for the remainder of the semester. To do a first experiment with a common networking tool.

Related Course Outcomes:

LO1 (Learning Outcome 1) -- Understand layered architectures.

LO2 -- Describe in detailed the seven layers in the OSI model, major functionalities in each layer, and the relationship with the TCP/IP model.

LO3 -- Analyze the performance metrics of networks, including bandwidth, delay, and error rate.

LO9 -- Use networking tools including telnet, ping, traceroute, bing, and Ethereal to evaluate simple network characteristics.

Specification:

Do the following problems from Chapter 1: 17, 20, 21, 28, 35 and submit them in Hw1.pdf. For each problem you should show your complete calculations, along with any assumption you are making. The answer by itself will receive 0 credit. For problem 35 you should do a decent write-up of your experiments. Explain where you ping'd, in your write up give some example transcripts of you interacting with the terminal, and have a plot of your results with discussion.

Point Breakdown
